Sanitation workers met Mayor Karamjit Singh Rintu to lodge their protest over the interference of councillors in their work.

Vinod Kumar Bitta, president of the Safai Karamchari Union, alleged that on the demand of councillors, the Mayor was going to give them powers to verify the functioning of the safai karamcharis’ (sanitation workers) and mark their attendances besides deploying them at any type of work.

“We opposed such a practice. As per the Municipal Act, councillors’ can’t intervene or give directions to MC employees. They can contact sanitary inspectors for any work. Sanitary inspectors further assign the work to karamcharis,” he added.

The councillors have been demanding dedicated safai karamcharis for their wards. The MC provides safai karamcharis at zone level, not for any individual ward. Sanitary inspectors give directions and distribute the task among the safai karamcharis on zone level.

The Mayor assured them that no such system would be implemented if they have any objection.
