In a hot afternoon, 58-year-old Narendra Chawla and his wife Usha can be seen patrolling in their car, looking for a busy spot to park and serve water. It is their way of spending a fruitful day, by distributing drinking water to commuters.

Chawla, a businessman, has been doing it for years. “Summers can be really harsh and there are not many public drinking water facilities available in the city. So we serve water to people as a way of giving back to society,” he says. Their recent outing near Golden Temple invited a lot of curious glances. Chawla has modified his MUV to convert the rear seating space into a water tanker with a tap. The couple find new spots everyday and serve water during peak hours of the day.

A strong believer in karma, Chawla also arranges free-of-cost travels for devotes to various religious places every year. “Small acts make big impact and I believe that may be more people get inspired and start helping others in some manner. As a society, we need to be thoughtful towards each other and my serving water is one such gesture,” he says.

Chawla also mentions that in the wake of rising temperatures, more public drinking water facilities should be installed by the administration. “Not every person has access to clean drinking water, especially road dwellers. So we need more such facilities for them.”
