Punjab Local Bodies Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu visited the snatching vicitm’s kin in Green Avenue here today. He said the government was serious over the issue and every possible measure would be taken to curb the menace.

The victim, Garima Mehra, having a one-year baby in her lap was targeted by snatchers a few days ago. She and her child fell down and were also dragged up to some distance by two bike-borne snatchers. The incident was recorded in a CCTV camera installed in the area. The video of the incident went viral, sending shock waves across the city. It has created a panic among residents, especially women.

Sidhu said he was shocked as well as ashamed over the incident and took the moral responsibility. He said that as per the police, the perpetrators of the crime had been identified and efforts were on to arrest them. “I will try to expedite the process of CCTV camera installation which is the need of the hour to nail the culprits,” he added.

“I will personally take up this issue with Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh and ensure that effective measures are taken to control the snatching menace,” he said. Criminals should have the fear of law. The minister was accompanied by Police Commissioner SS Srivastav. He also visited the spot where snatching took place.

Naval Kishore Mehra, grandfather of the victim, said the minister had assured them of taking appropriate steps to nail the culprits.

Residents of the area said the police had failed to curb the snatching incidents. They pointed out that the snatchers, who were arrested and sent to jail, should not be allowed to come out on bail. They said once they come out, they restart their nefarious activities.
