The SGPC task force caught two persons for allegedly stealing purse of a devotee at the Golden Temple complex here yesterday. They were handed over to the Galliara police where a case was registered.

The accused have been identified as Happy Singh of Sandhu Colony and Jaspinder Singh, alias Ghaungri, of Kalomahal village in Ajnala. A case under Sections 379 and 411 of the IPC has been registered against them.

Lovepreet Singh, the victim, stated to the police that he had come to Golden Temple to pay obeisance. He was standing in a queue at Darshani Deorhi and the accused were behind him. They managed to steal his purse and were trying to slip away when they were nabbed with the help of devotees. The police have recovered the purse from them.

Balwinder Singh, investigating officer, said the accused had been taken on police remand for further investigation.

Devotees coming to Darbar Sahib are easy targets for unscrupulous elements. Many such cases have been reported in the past. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has installed high-definition CCTV cameras on the premises to identify anti-social elements.

Thefts and snatchings from tourists has become a bane for the holy city.
