Amritsar, July 9

Residents of Dharad village caught a “drug peddler” and thrashed him before handing him over to the Jandiala Guru police. They also caught an addict who was purchasing drugs from him. The villagers recorded a video of the incident that has gone viral on social media.

The video footage shows villagers telling that the suspect, Jasbir Singh Jass, was selling a pouch of drugs to an addict, Arshdeep Singh, when they were held. The addict said that he had purchased the same from the accused for Rs 400. The accused drives a van to deliver LPG cylinders.

SSP Parampal Singh said Jasbir Singh Jass and Arshdeep Singh along with Deepa, from whom they had procured the drugs, had been booked and further investigation was under way.

Many non-government organisations (NGOs) along with religious organisations have joined the fight against drugs. A Sikh organisation recently caught a 20-year-old girl of Jagatpur village in Tarn Taran selling heroin after one of its members approached her as a decoy ‘customer’. The incident was videographed, the police were called and the girl was handed over to them.

Significantly, more and more locals are coming forward to give information about the people who have been selling drugs.

It is turning out to be a people’s movement against drugs. With the recent spate of deaths due to consumption of spurious or adulterated drugs, the dejected public appears to have made up its mind to make significant contribution for elimination of the drug menace.

  • Along with them, the police have registered a case against one Deepa, from whom they had procured the drugs.
