Amritsar, April 22

The Sadar police have arrested Sanjiv Kumar, alias Bau, of Tung Bala locality and Gourav Kumar of New Kapoor Nagar for allegedly possessing over 1,000 intoxicating tablets. According to the police, they are drug addicts who had been procuring drugs for themselves as well as selling the same to other addicts to make money.

The police presented them in a court and took them on two-day remand for further interrogation. Investigating officer Paramjit Singh said they used to get the drugs from someone near the bus stand. They used to contact the person on mobile who used to call them at the bus stand. The accused don’t know about the identity of the man who had been selling them intoxicating tablets.

A case under Sections 21, 22, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered against them.

Meanwhile, the Division D police have arrested Pardeep Kumar, alias Babbu, of Bazaar Borian Wala and seized 25 gm of heroin from his possession. A separate case has been registered against him.

Despite the police crackdown, there has been no let up in the illegal drug trade in not only the district but across the state. Most of the drug traders are themselves addicts who take up illegal activities to make money to meet their drug needs.
