Waste mgmt co fails to distribute garbage bins

The solid waste management company, hired by the Municipal Corporation (MC) failed to provide bins for garbage segregation to all households in the city. As per the contract, the company was supposed to provide 3.40 lakh bins in 1.70 lakh households in the city. The company has claimed to distribute 2.40 lakh dustbins among 1.20 lakh houses. Even after nine months, around 50,000 households are still deprived from the bins for garbage segregation.

To achieve the target of dustbin distribution, the health wing of Municipal Corporation planned to observe Environment Day on June 5 by distributing the bins on a mass level. Dr Raju Chohan, Municipal Health Office, said, “The company has distributed the bins in most of the wards. To speed up the distribution, we will start the mass distribution on June 5”.

The company has been distributing 100 bins every day.

Earlier, the Solid Waste Management Company had distributed green and blue bins as per the recommendation of the Central Government. But now, company workers have been distributing the white and blue bins instead of green and blue dustbins under the solid waste management project.

Dr Raju Chohan said: “As per the Municipal Solid Wastes (Management and Handling) Rules, bin of any colour can be used. The company has been distributing bins of two colours.”

The company has been collecting door-to-door garbage from 54 wards of the city. Residents were asked to dumb the garbage in separate two bins so it would be easy to segregate. More than 700 employees working on 200 vehicles visit every street and collect garbage from every house.
