The dumping of garbage near chhabeel stalls, set up to serve cold sweetened water to people heading towards the Golden Temple, at the railway station has become irksome for people. Sensing the unavailability of cold drinking water, Sant Baba Bhuriwale and some philanthropists have been contributing to provide cold water to passengers.
A large shed has been erected, in which a water-cooler, a table and utensils have been kept to serve hundreds of railway passengers. It was hoped that the railway authorities would provide more facilities to the volunteers but the hopes were dashed when the railway employees started dumping garbage near the stall where pigs and rodents can be seen found the clock.
It became an onerous task for the volunteers to serve water in such a filthy and foul-emanating situation.
Despite the allocation of crores of rupees for the modernisation of the city railway station, the facility of cold drinking water is not available at the platform number 1, said Kulwant Singh, a passenger.
A railway official, who didn’t wish to be named, said, “The matter has been brought to our notice, we will look into it.”
