Bathinda, April 22

The NSS unit of Baba Farid College, Bathinda, observed Earth Day with full zest and zeal on the campus today.

Students and staff members of the college took a pledge on the occasion. NSS volunteers displayed posters to make the students aware of issues being faced by the Earth. They also spread awareness about conserving natural resources.

A quiz competition was also organised to create interest about the Earth among the students. Prizes were given to those who gave correct answers. Lovepreet Singh and Harjinder Singh, both NSS volunteers, delivered speeches on the occasion. They motivated others to put in efforts at the individual level to save the Earth.

Dr Valentina Chauhan and Vimal Kumar, both assistant professors of agriculture, delivered lectures on the occasion. They said the Earth was known as the living planet because it had water and suitable conditions for plants and animals to survive.

They said the Earth had also protective equipment like the Ozone layer, magnetic field and natural cycles such as water cycles and nitrogen cycles.

BD Sharma, deputy director (activities), Baba Farid Group of Institutions (BFGI), addressed the students. He said god had created the universe with infinite wisdom, power and designed the Earth especially for human life. He said steps should be taken to save the Earth so that future generations could live in a safe environment.

Dr Gurmeet Singh Dhaliwal, chairman, BFGI, said, “The Earth had everything to fulfil man’s needs, which make it a living planet. So we should take steps to save it and control pollution.”

SSD College of Professional Studies

Students of the SSD College of Professional Studies, Bhokhra (Bathinda), observed Earth Day on the college premises.

The staff and students of the Agriculture Department in association with the environment club of the college carried out a plantation drive. Principal Dr Rajesh Singla delivered a lecture on the importance of afforestation in the environment.

He also stated that global warming and climate change had become a major problem these days due to urbanisation. “Afforestation does not only regulate the temperature of surroundings but also increases the aesthetics beauty of the place. The Earth is the only place in the universe where the life exists but we have exploited its resources to an unexpected level for personal greed and interests.”
