...passes off peacefully in Muktsar district

The bandh call given by the Ravidasia community against the demolition of a historic temple in Delhi evoked a strong response in Muktsar, Malout and Gidderbaha towns on Tuesday. All major markets remained close till afternoon in all three sub-divisional towns.

Luckily, no untoward incident took place. Protest marches were taken out in these towns and the protesters urged shopkeepers to shut their business establishments. A large number of policemen moved along the protest marches. Further, police personnel in civvies were also deployed, who kept on eye on every minute development.

Some SAD workers also joined the protest marches in these towns.

Meanwhile, protesters blocked the Malout-Delhi national highway in Malout town for nearly three hours. Traffic policemen created some diversions for the convenience of commuters.

A senior police officer said the day passed off peacefully and no untoward incident occurred anywhere in the district.

Harmesh Khuddian, a protester, said, “We had blocked the Malout-Delhi national highway for nearly half an hour at Lambi village. Later, the naib tehsildar and the Station House Officer of the Lambi police station received a memorandum from us and we lifted the blockade.”
