ADC (D) takes stock of arrangements for Saras Mela

BATHINDA: A 12-day long regional Saras Mela is going to commence from October 14 at a local Dadi Poti Park of Model Town, Phase-I.

A 12-day long regional Saras Mela is going to commence from October 14 at a local Dadi Poti Park of Model Town, Phase-I. The fair is being organised to promote cultural, traditional and rich heritage values of different states.

As many as 250 stalls of self-help groups from across the country will be set up during the fair. Besides, cultural activities, magic shows, entertainment and recreational activities for children will also be organised.

Artistes from Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Jammu and Kashmir, Mizoram, Manipur, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Haryana and West Bengal will also present various cultural items during the fair.

More than 6,000 school students will also take part in the 12-day long fair. The self-help groups will exhibit their self-made products vis-à-vis other art and craft goods.

Nodal officer of this mega event and Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development) Shena Aggarwal today reviewed the arrangements for the fair. She said the main objective of the fair was to provide a platform to rural craftsmanship under the aegis of the Union Rural Development Ministry in collaboration with the Punjab Government.

She said, “The fair is not only providing best and direct opportunities to sell the goods being prepared by craftsmen but also is generating employment. With the promotion of rural development, this mega event is also promoting tourism in a big way. More than 25 states are participating in the fair.”

The ADC (D) said the fair was a healthy platform for the craftsman and artisans from across the country to exhibit their talent through the handicrafts.

She said these handicrafts were a part of the rich legacy of the vibrant culture of our country. Aggarwal appealed to the residents of the district to ensure their healthy participation. — TNS
