Couple booked for Rs14 lakh immigration fraud

Barnala city police have registered a fraud case against a husband-wife duo on the charge of duping a Dhurkot youth of Rs 14 lakh on the pretext of sending him to Canada on a work permit. Police have started further investigations.

As per the first information report (FIR) registered, Jaspal Singh from Dhurkot has alleged that he came in contact with the two accused, Amarjit Singh and his wife Manpreet from Barnala, through some of his relatives. Since he was trying to send his younger brother Amrit Singh abroad, the husband-wife duo assured him of sending his brother to Canada on work permit.

As per the allegations, both initially demanded Rs 16 lakh, but the deal was finalized at Rs 14 lakh.

“Out of the total amount, we gave Rs 4 lakh to both in October 2016 and he sent my brother to Dubai on October 20 and assured that my brother would get a visa for Canada from Dubai within some days. Later, we gave them Rs 10 lakh as both said that they would get a Canadian visa for my brother only after receiving the remaining amount,” said Jaspal.

But even after getting Rs 14 lakh, the accused did not provide the work permit for Canada to Amrit in Dubai and handed him over a fake passport of Singapore . After finding the passport to be fake, Amrit came back to India on November 12, 2016.

“After my brother came back , we demanded our money back. But when both of them did not return our money, we lodged a complaint three months back and finally an FIR was registered against them,” said Jaspal.

ASI Jagsir Singh, who is conducting the investigations, said they were conducting raids to arrest the accused.
