Farmers made aware of agromet advisory services

BATHINDA: The Agro-Meteorology Field Unit of the Regional Research Centre of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Bathinda, organised a one-day farmers’ awareness programme at Shergarh village here today.

The Agro-Meteorology Field Unit of the Regional Research Centre of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Bathinda, organised a one-day farmers’ awareness programme at Shergarh village here today.

Farmers were told about technical issues about weather and agromet advisory services and their impact on cereal and vegetable crops.

About 70 farmers from Shergarh village in Bathinda district participated in the event, which was funded by the Indian Meteorological Department under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India.

Dr Raj Kumar Pal, Assistant Agrometeorologist, Regional Station, Bathinda, highlighted the importance and use of weather information in agriculture.

Dr Pal also explained the agro met advisory services and their dissemination through different modes to the farmers.

The farmers were made aware of the different sources from which they can get information regarding forecast and advisory.

Dr Rupesh Arora, Assistant Plant Pathologist, Regional Station, Bathinda, discussed the diseases of wheat, mustard and barley besides their control according to the university recommendations.

He also stated the importance of weather parameters in occurrence of the diseases and applicability of weather forecast in different agricultural operations.

Dr Naveen Garg, Assistant Vegetable Botanist, Regional Station, Bathinda, discussed the impact of changing climate on vegetable production. He described the importance of agromet advisory services in controlling the pests, diseases and cultural management practices.
