The CIA-1 wing of the Bathinda police today busted a gang whose members allegedly demanded ransom from people by threatening them.
Four members of the gang were arrested by the police and a case has been registered against accused at the Dyalpura police station.
Addressing mediapersons, SSP Naveen Singla said CIA-1 wing in charge Rajinder Kumar yesterday received a tip-off about Gora Singh, Satnam Singh, Pargat Singh, Kartar Singh alias Tara and Harman Singh, residents of Bhodipur, have formed a gang and they had illegal weapons.
The accused allegedly took ransom from businessmen by sending letters at their homes and threatening them.
Acting on the tip-off, Rajinder Kumar and the team of the CIA-1 wing arrested Pargat Singh, Satnam Singh, Gora Singh and Harman Singh from a drain at Jallal village, Singla added.
The police team also recovered a .32 bore revolver, a country-made pistol of .32 bore, a country-made pistol of .315 bore and 11 cartridges.
The team also recovered Rs 1 lakh and one motorcycle (PB-03AN-3574) from the accused.
SSP Naveen Singla said the accused had taken ransom from many shopkeepers, who had not lodged complaints due to fear of gangsters.
During investigation, the accused admitted that they had taken ransom from Ram Kumar, a shopkeeper on Bhai Behlo road, by sending a letter to his house.
The in charge CIA-1 wing said the accused were drug addicts and all of them would be produced in the court tomorrow.
Pargat Singh has already been booked under the Excise Act and also for assault at the Bhadni Kalan police station.
Accused Kartar Singh Tara is absconding.
A case under Sections 399, 402 and 384 of the IPC and 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act has been registered at the Dyalpura police station.
