Bathinda, December 10
Members of the GNDTP Contractual Workers’ Union, along with the District Democratic Teachers’ Front, BKU (Ugrahan) and Jamhuriat Adhikar Sabha, held a gate rally at Hazura Kapura colony today.
The members said they would stage a state-level protest in the city and gherao the Deputy Commissioner’s office on December 14.
Addressing the protesters, Ashwani Kumar, president of the GNDTP Contractual Workers’ Union, said, “The power tariff will go up with the closure of thermal plants. The Congress had promised to generate new job avenues before the elections, but now its government is taking away people’s livelihood.”
Amrik Singh, block president of the BKU (Ugrahan), said, “Rates of electricity will go up and many workers will lose their jobs if thermal plants are closed. We all have to oppose the state government for creating this environment in the state where every individual is worried about his livelihood.”
Resham Singh, leader of District Democratic Teachers’ Front, said, “The city is already facing unscheduled power cuts, which is a clear indication that the demand for power is higher than the supply.”
