Bathinda, June 22

To encourage farmers for supplementing their income through agriculture-allied businesses, a honey cluster is being developed at Tungwali village.

Around 40 farmers falling under the cluster are on a two-day tour to the Markfed’s honey processing unit in Jalandhar and Punjab’s Centre for Excellence for Vegetables in Kartarpur.

Deputy Commissioner Diprava Lakra on Friday flagged off a van. Gurkewal Singh, Deputy Director, Department of Horticulture, was also present on the occasion.

Lakra said during the two-day visit, the farmers would be told about various aspects of honey production and vegetable cultivation.

He added that besides, to encourage bee farming, the Department of Horticulture would give 20,160 boxes of bees to 496 farmers of the district. These would produce around 605 MT of honey annually, the DC said.

The DC said, “To increase pollination under the National Horticulture Mission, every beneficiary will be given 50 boxes on 40 per cent subsidy. The total cost of the boxes is Rs 2 lakh and on these boxes, Rs 80,000 subsidy will be given.”
