Bathinda: The Department of Biotechnology and Medical of Baba Farid College organised an industrial-oriented lecture on “Algal Bio-Technology: An advanced Industrial Approach for Renewable Energy Needs”. Dr Rajiv Kumar Aneja, founder and director, ABCA Bio-solutions Pvt Ltd, Mohali, delivered the lecture. He apprised students of the algal biotechnology, increasing pollutants and removal of pollutants by using carbon dioxide in algal growth and various other bio-fuel production techniques. Dr Gurmeet Singh Dhaliwal, chairman, Baba Farid Group of Institutions (BFGI) appreciated the efforts of the department in organising the lecture.TNS

Freshers’ party

Bathinda: The Department of Computer Science and Applications of Malwa College, Bathinda, organised a freshers’ party, “FreshOmania 2k17”, to welcome the newcomers. Principal Prof NK Gosain, was the chief guest on the occasion. Dr Sarbjeet Kaur Dhillon, deputy director, graced the occasion as the guest of honour. The chief guest inaugurated the function by lighting the ceremonial lamp. Dr Sarbjeet Kaur Dhillon and Poonam were the judges of the competitions. Students of the department mesmerised the audience with various performances. Hasanpreet Kaur, Mamta, Lakhwinder Singh, and Ajaydeep Singh were adjudged Ms Fesher, Ms Gorgeous, Mr Fresher and Mr Perfect, respectively. The titles of Ms Catwalk and Ms High Heels were grabbed by Gagandeep Kaur and Amandeep Kaur. Manpreet Singh and Parminder Kaur were adjudged Mr Photogenic and Ms Beautiful Hair repectively. TNS

3 held with snatched phones

Bathinda: The Cantonment police on Monday busted a gang of burglars and arrested three persons. The accused were active in the city from the past six months and looted mobile phones, gold jewellery and purses from people. The kingpin of the gang, Sikander Singh, has been absconding, along with another accused. A case under Sections 379B and 34 of the IPC has been registered against the accused. The arrested accused have been identified as Gagandeep Singh, Ravi Singh and Vijay Kumar, residents of Model Town, Bathinda. Iqbal Singh, SHO of the Cantonment police station, said acting on a tip-off, a police team led by ASI Rajpal Singh arrested the three from Phase-1, Model Town. The police have recovered five mobile phones from the accused. TNS

14 booked for assault

The Rampura (City) police on Monday booked 12 persons for assaulting a person and damaging his vehicle over a dispute of land at Mehraj village. In a complaint lodged by Sukhdev Singh, a resident of Mehraj village, it has been alleged that Gurlal Singh, a resident of Sidhana, Amandeep Singh, a resident of Sardoolgarh, Manpreet Singh and Jaggi, along with 8 unidentified persons, assaulted his son Buta Singh at his house. IO Gamdoor Singh said a case under Sections 323, 452, 506, 427, 148 and 149 of the IPC and 25, 27, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act had been registered against the accused. In another incident, the Raman police have booked two persons of Gaatwali village for assaulting a person over a dispute on crackers. In a complaint lodged by Raj Kumar, it has been alleged that Jagmail Singh and his brother Jaskaran Singh, residents of Gaatwali, entered damaged his shop and assaulted him as a dispute took place over crackers. Investigating officer Kuldeep Singh said a case under Sections 323, 324, 427 and 34 of the IPC had been registered at the Raman police station against the accused. TNS
