Man gets life term for killing father over property issue

BATHINDA: A district court today sentenced a man to life imprisonment for murdering his father over a property dispute.

Bathinda, April 26

A district court today sentenced a man to life imprisonment for murdering his father over a property dispute. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 on the accused.

District and Sessions Judge Parmjeet Singh announced the quantum of punishment.

He held the accused guilty under Section 302 of the IPC for murder. The court also said the accused would have to serve extra time in prison if he failed to pay the monetary penalty.

As per the details of the case, angered at his father for not giving him his share of the property, accused Vakeel Singh attacked Bikkar Singh on his head with a wooden log when the latter was sitting in the courtyard of his house on February 27, 2016.

His other sons Kakna Singh and Jagsir Singh immediately took him to the Civil Hospital at Nathana, but due to serious injuries, he was referred to Civil Hospital, Bathinda.

However, they got him admitted to Adesh Hospital where he died after a few days.

In the court, convict Vakeel Singh said he was the only bread winner in his family consisting of three minor children.

There is nobody at home to look after his family due to which a lenient view might be taken on the quantum of sentence, Vakeel said.

The public prosecutor for the state opposed this plea.

While awarding the judgment, the District and Sessions Judge said the convict had killed his own father for lust of property and as such no leniency should be shown to him.

However, taking into account the facts and the circumstances of the case and also the antecedents of the convict, it is not found to be a rarest of rare case warranting the awarding of capital punishment. — TNS
