Bathinda, March 26

In a contrast to the claims made by the Municipal Corporation (MC), Bathinda, regarding improved basic infrastructure, the condition of roads in the city portrays a saga of apathy and neglect.

The main road at Paras Ram Nagar is in a dilapidated condition, causing inconvenience to commuters. Potholes have appeared on the road due to which travelling on it has become an uphill task for the commuters.

The road connects various areas of the trans-railway line area to the city and witnesses heavy rush of commuters on a daily basis.

Besides causing inconvenience, the poor condition of the road is also leading to road accidents.

Residents said they had even taken up the matter with officials of the civic body, including the Mayor, and MLA last year, but to no avail.

“We have made several representations to the authorities concerned to address the issue, but all went in vain,” said Suresh Kumar, a resident.

Another resident Pardeep Kumar said, “The condition of the main road at Paras Ram Nagar is very bad and it needs immediate repair. We use the road while going to the city. It has been neglected by the civic body.”

“The condition of the road is so bad that residents don’t speed up their vehicles due to the fear of meeting with an accident. I hope that the new government in the state may provide some relief to us. We hope that the new government will get the road repaired in the coming days”, said Raj Kumar, a resident of the city.

The condition of other link as well as main roads in the city is not different from this road. The authorities concerned blame the poor drainage system and bowl shape of Bathinda for the accumulation of rain water on roads, resulting in damage to the roads.

Residents accuse the contractors of being involved in corruption and allege that they use poor quality of material, led to early depletion of roads.

An MC official said, “Most of the roads in the city had been re-carpeted, while the work on some of the roads is under way. All roads in the city will be re-carpeted.”
