Police to take tough measures against liquor smugglers

The Bathinda police will take strict action against liquor peddlers as the smuggling of illicit liquor has not stopped from Haryana to Punjab.

After around 300 cases of illicit liquor have been registered in the district in the past three months, the police have also started adopting a tough stance against liquor contractors of Haryana and those residents of Punjab who have liquor vend contracts in border districts of Haryana.

Many contractors in the state have vends in Haryana as they failed to fetch contracts in Punjab.

Liquor is cheaper in Haryana as compared to Punjab.

Two wine contractors in Haryana, who hails from Punjab, have been booked in the past two days and in the next few days and more persons will be booked.

Two days ago, the police had booked Nand Kishore, a resident of the state, who is a wine contractor in Haryana for liquor smuggling.

Today the CIA-2 team have booked Anil Kumar, a resident of Goniana Mandi, under the Excise Act at the Nehianwala police station.

Addressing mediapersons, Tarjinder Singh, in charge, CIA-2, said: “We got a tip-off about Kewal Singh, a resident of Gandhi Basti and a staff of Anil Kumar, Goniana Mandi, that he had been involved in liquor peddling in the area.

Acting on the tip-off, the police team, led by ASI Ranjit Singh, had recovered 15 boxes of illicit liquor from a car (bearing registration number PB03 R 1821) near Amargarh village. The police had arrested Kewal.

During investigation, it came to know that the registration number of the car was fake. Another number plate (bearing registration number DL2C J 2816) was recovered from the vehicle, he said.

He said Kewal had been working for Anil, who have a liquor vend in Sirsa district and Anil was initiating liquor peddling in Punjab with the help of Kewal.

Tarjinder Singh said: “Anil will be arrested soon. A case has been registered against Kewal and Anil under Sections 420 and 473 of the IPC and the Excise Act.
