Bathinda, April 25

Residents of Street No. 2, Nai Basti, staged a protest against the installation of a mobile phone tower in their area last night.

Raising slogans, the residents managed to stall the work. Today, they submitted a memorandum to Mayor Balwant Rai Nath.

They demanded that the mobile tower be removed from their area. They also urged the Mayor to cancel the no objection certificate (NOC) given by the MCB for the installation of the mobile tower.

The residents alleged that the house owner had obtained the NOC from the MCB in a wrong way and it should be cancelled immediately. They said legal action should also be initiated in this regard.

The protesters said the installation of mobile towers in residential areas was a serious health hazard to the population, especially children.

They said these towers emit and receive harmful waves. The residents of the street said the tower should not be installed at any cost.

They said it was scientifically proven that such radiations might also cause fatal diseases such as cancer.

They alleged that the house owner had kept the MCB officials in the dark for getting the NOC. Instead of taking signatures of residents the street where the tower was being installed, the owner took signatures of relatives and residents of other streets, they added.

After listening to the residents, the Mayor assured them that a probe will be initiated to know how the house owner got the NOC. He further added that if the allegation proves to be true, strict action as per the law would be taken against the owner and the NOC would be cancelled.

The Mayor also assured the residents that the tower would not be installed in their area.
