The water shortage woes, which had hit the city due to Sirhind canal closure, may end soon as water has been released into the canal. It also started flowing into the Bathinda section of the canal on Thursday evening.

The shortage of water, however, may prevail in some areas of the city for at least two more days as it will take a few days to supply adequate water to all households and other establishments.

Meanwhile, residents of several areas are still reeling under a shortage of water. Residents of Nita Street near Mehna Chowk on Thursday staged a protest against officials of the civic body.

Protesters Rajni, Santosh, Prem Lata and other ladies of the area said despite bringing the problem to the notice of the authorities concerned, they had not tried to make any alternate arrangement to address their issues.

Malkit Kaur and Rani Kaur, residents of Gurukul Road area near Jogi Nagar, also expressed unhappiness over water shortage. They said for the past 10 days, the water supply was not adequate and in the past three days, the supply had completely stopped.

Pratap Nagar councillor Anjana Rani, along with Pooja Rani, Tilak Raj and other residents of the area, said they had been facing problems due to a shortage of water.

Ravi Kumar, SDO, Water Supply Department, said although the water supply was rationed, it was consistent. “The shortage of water was due to the canal closure. Water has now been released and the shortage will end in a few days,” he added.
