Sessions judge visits Central Jail in city

Paramjeet Singh, District and Sessions Judge, District Legal Services Authority, Bathinda, inspected the Central Jail here today.

They paid a visit to the hospital, factory, re-habilitation centre, female ward and sports centre on the jail premises. Some convicts urged that they wanted to file an appeal against conviction orders passed against them and thereafter the directions were issued to the Superintendent of Central Jail, Bathinda, to send their appeal to the High Court Legal Services Committee and the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee wherever required.

He assured the inmates that they would get a speedy trial in case the period of their detention was long and noted down the names of various inmates who requested for speedy trial. He interacted with those inmates who were in need of legal help and directed the CJM/Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, Bathinda, to take necessary action for providing free legal aid to the inmates who were in need of legal help and support. He also visited the kitchen and tasted the food.

The judge also interacted with Para Legal Volunteers who have been deputed to help illiterate and needy prisoners in writing down their grievances. A separate list was prepared for the undertrials who had been in the jail for a long time and their challans had not been presented. The convicts and undertrials were further encouraged to continue yoga and channelise their energy into public welfare works.

The Chief Judicial Magistrate addressed the jail inmates through the public address system and briefed them that they should write down their problems on paper with complete particulars. The convicts were asked to take the help of Para Legal Volunteers for jotting down their problems, particularly for taking free legal aid.
