Bathida, December 5

The 62nd Punjab State Sports Throwball (U-17) Championship for boys and girls got underway in the city today.

The opening ceremony of the championship was held at Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Mall Road. District Education Officer (Secondary) Khushbir Singh was the chief guest and declared the championship open.

Addressing the students, the chief guest emphasised on the importance of sports in a student’s life. He said participating in sports tournaments enhances the sportsman spirit in students.

In the boys’ category, Jalandhar beat Tarn Taran 25-18, 25-9 while Fazilka beat Fatehgarh Sahib 25-9, 25-6 and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar trounced Mansa 25-12, 25-20.

In other matches, hosts Bathinda beat Faridkot 25-12, 25-20 while Patiala defeated Ludhiana 25-18, 25-15 and Moga beat Amritsar 25-10, 25-11. Muktsar thrashed Fatehgarh Sahib 25-4, 25-5.

In the girls’ category, Muktsar blanked Faridkot 15-0, 15-0 while Mansa beat hosts Bathinda 25-23, 25-16 and Jalandhar defeated Ludhiana 25-17, 25-21. In another match, Muktsar trounced Sangrur 13-0, 25-5.

Karamjit Singh, Sweenkiran Kaur, Krishan Goyal, Jagdish Kumar Tungwali, Nazar Singh, Harbhagwan Dass, Mandeep Kaur and others were also present at the opening ceremony.
