Car sales decline, passenger vehicles accelerate in January

NEW DELHI: Domestic passenger vehicle sales jumped 7.57% to 2,85,477 units in January from 2,65,389 units in the same month last year even as the April 2017 to January 2018 period reflected a 13.20% rise in the sale of passenger vehicles.

Domestic passenger vehicle sales jumped 7.57% to 2,85,477 units in January from 2,65,389 units in the same month last year even as the April 2017 to January 2018 period reflected a 13.20% rise in the sale of passenger vehicles.

Car sales, however, declined 1.25% to 1,84,264 units last month as against 1,86,596 units in January last year, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) said here today.

The industry produced a total 2,38,90,166 vehicles, including passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, three-wheelers, two-wheelers and quadricycle in April-January 2018 as against 2,11,04,750 in April-January 2017, registering a growth of 13.2% over the same period last year.

The sale of passenger vehicles grew by 8.07% in April-January 2018 over the same period last year. Within the passenger vehicles, passenger cars, utility vehicle and vans grew by 3.61%, 21.29% and 5.33%, respectively, in April-January 2018 over the same period last year.

The commercial vehicles segment grew by 17.88% in April-January 2018 as compared to the same period last year. Medium and heavy commercial vehicles increased by 10.45% and light commercial vehicles grew by 23.17% in April-January 2018 over the same period last year.
