New Delhi, January 1

Country’s largest car-maker Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL) today reported a 13.5% increase in domestic sales for December 2015, while the second-largest player Hyundai Motors India Ltd (HMIL) posted a stronger domestic sales growth of 28.8%.

The strong increase in demand for MSIL was led by compact segment vehicles such as Baleno (launched in October last year) and the utility vehicle, S Cross.

December is usually a month of high sales as companies push products aggressively with high discounts to clear stocks. Domestic sales in December stood at 1,11,333 units, the company said. Exports during the month declined 33% to 7,816 units.

The company said its domestic sales in the nine-month ending December 2015 rose 13.9% to 9,71,958 units.

HMIL reported a high domestic sales growth of 28.8% in December 2015.

Its domestic sales rose to 41,861 units in December on the back of demand for Creta and Grand i10. The country’s largest exporter of passenger vehicles, however, saw exports decline over 17% in December to 22,274 units.
