To recover the pending dues of provident fund from the defaulters, the office of the Regional Provident Fund Commissioner has served over 600 notices in the current fiscal to various firms based in Patiala, Chandigarh, Fatehgarh Sahib, Ropar and Mohali. According to data, around Rs 71 crore is pending with several establishments.

Industry experts attribute the rise in defaults to a slowdown in economic activity.

“Last year, we had sent one promoter of the defaulting company to jail and also got arrest warrant issued against the promoter of other defaulting company,” said a senior officer in the office of the Regional Provident Fund Commissioner, Chandigarh.

He added that the defaulter firm was liable to prosecution. Last year, the Regional PF Commissioner at Chandigarh recovered Rs 8.02 crore out of the total pending amount of Rs 9.84 crore.
