In its efforts to extend international cooperation, Solan-based Shoolini University has signed MoUs with three premier Chinese universities.

A university delegation headed by Pro Vice- Chancellor Prof. Atul Khosla and biotechnologist Prof. Saurabh Kulshrestha visited China recently and signed the MoUs with the heads of Hainan University, Haikou; Hainan Tropical Ocean University, Sanya; and Yunnan Agricultural University, Kunming. The tie-ups will cement relationship between the institutions and create new opportunities for joint educational work, allowing students to study at both Shoolini and its partner universities in China. Academic staff will have the opportunity to jointly supervise students and also work together on faculty and exchange programmes.

Power Grid organises workshop  on ‘Preventive Vigilance’

A workshop on 'Preventive Vigilance' was organised by the Vigilance Department of Power Grid (NR-1) for senior executives of Northern Region-I from March 9 to 11 in Jaipur. Seema Gupta, Executive Director, Power Grid, NR-1, inaugurated the programme. The training sessions were interactive with eminent faculty delivering lectures and presentations on preventive vigilance, ethics and corporate governance. LK Asthana, Additional General Manager (Vigilance), NR-I, emphasised the need and importance of such trainings. RP Sasmal, Director (Operations), graced the valedictory ceremony of the workshop.

Reach out to every child in distress: Chandrasekhar to NCPCR

Member of Parliament Rajeev Chandrasekhar has called for a “holistic approach” through a convergent and coordinated manner by all the governments and NGOs concerned to protect children’s rights and in reaching out to every child in difficult circumstances. He was addressing the 10th foundation day of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) in New Delhi on March 5. Expressing concern over the increasing number of crime against children, Chandrasekhar said, NCPCR can and must continue to play the role of a catalyst. He said due to the efforts of the NCPCR, the state commissions for protection of child rights, government, police, judiciary and media, awareness about the child protection had increased.

PFC signs loan agreement with MSEDCL for Rs 3,000 crore

Power Finance Corporation Ltd. (PFC) has signed a loan agreement with Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co. Ltd. (MSEDCL) for a financial assistance of Rs 3,000 crore. It will help MSEDCL meet its operational requirements within the working capital eligibility allowed under UDAY Scheme of Government of India. The loan will help MSEDCL clear its outstanding power purchase liabilities also. The loan document was signed by SL Pimpalkhute, Director (Finance), MSEDCL, in the presence of Rajeev Sharma, CMD, PFC, D. Ravi, Director (Commercial), C. Gangopadhyay, Director (Projects), PFC, and C. Gadre, CGM (Finance), MSEDCL.

BHEL begins operation of its first 800 MW unit

BHEL has commenced commercial operation of its first 800 MW unit - highest-rating coal-based supercritical thermal power plant. The milestone was achieved for the first unit of the 2x800 MW Yeramarus thermal power station of Raichur Power Corporation Limited (RPCL), in Raichur district of Karnataka.

Significantly, the commercial operation of this unit also marks BHEL's foray as a developer into the field of power generation. Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd. (KPCL) and BHEL are the main equity partners of RPCL, the owner and operator of this power plant.BHEL did complete design, engineering, manufacture, supply, erection and commissioning of this state-of-the-art supercritical project on turnkey basis.

Salal Power Station starts two more courses for women

In an endeavour to empower women under its CSR programme, Salal Power Station  has started two more short-term courses for women in Reasi district. JK Sharma, Manager (HR), Salal Power Station, inaugurated the 'Sewing Course' whereas Raj Kumar, Sarpanch of the locality, inaugurated the ‘Beautician Course’ in the presence of officers from NHPC Limited and local residents. Raj Kumar said developing skills among  women folk is a step towards women empowerment. He appreciated the initiatives taken by NHPC in all sectors like education, health, promotion of sports and skill development among women etc. in Reasi district from time to time.

Karnataka Tourism celebrates 2017 as ‘Year of the Wild’

Karnataka Tourism has declared 2017 as the ‘Year of the Wild’ for tourists. The campaign for this initiative was launched by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in the presence of Minister of State for IT, BT & Tourism Priyank Kharge along with Secretary, Tourism, Naveen Raj Singh, Dr N Manjula, Director, Tourism, and Kumar Pushkar, MD, KSTDC. The state is home to some of the largest jungle tracts south of the Vindhyas, which makes it a dream destination for adventurers and naturalists. Karnataka Tourism has already launched motorcycle tourism with a bike ride in Hampi with a series of more rides in varied destinations. The government is also promoting Mysore as an aero sport destination, especially for sky diving. Also on the cards is an international-level surfing festival in Mangalore in mid-2017 which will go a long way in promoting Karnataka’s beaches as a water sports destination.

‘Big Chandigarh Marathon’ to be organised on March 26

Exotic Grandeur, in association with Chandigarh Administration and Chandigarh Tourism, will organise 'Big Chandigarh Marathon' on March 26. This year, with more than 1,000 half-marathon runners expected to register, a total of 15,000 participants are expected to take part in the event. This will be the fifth edition of the Chandigarh Marathan. It is divided into two parts - one for professional runners i.e. 21.1 km half marathon (age group 18 to 50+) and the other 5 km run for city pride for amateurs, students from schools and colleges, employees, general public, including senior citizens. While the 5-km Run for City Pride would start at 7 am, the 21.1-km run would start at 6 am from Chandigarh Club. Interested persons can register by giving a missed call on 18001370927.

Minister inaugurates J&K Bank’s currency chest complex in Kupwara

J&K Minister for Rural Development, Panachayati Raj, Law and Justice Abdul Haq Khan stressed the need to promote healthy credit culture in Kupwara district where 70% of the population lives below poverty line. The credit culture includes hassle-free financial assistance through various loan schemes and most importantly timely repayment of loans so that economic cycle runs smoothly. He was speaking at a function in Kupwara on March 17 after inaugurating the J&K Bank’s Currency Chest Complex in the presence of bank’s Chairman and CEO Parvez Ahmed, Kupwara MLA Bashir Ahmad Dar, Kupwara DDC GM Dar and District and Sessions Judge Mohd Ibrahim. Other senior officers of the bank were also present on the occasion.
