Chandigarh, May 22

An IT professional who had alleged rape by a contractual employee of Hotel Taj, Chandigarh, was arrested today by the Amritsar police on an extortion charge after the woman made a similar complaint against the manager of a hotel on Queens Road in Amritsar.

In her complaint to the Amritsar police, the victim alleged that she was raped by the hotel manager and cash was stolen from her room.

A similar complaint against a hotel staffer in Chandigarh made the Amritsar police suspicious, who contacted the Chandigarh Police to enquire about the complaint made by the woman.

Inspector Parvesh Chopra, SHO of the Civil Lines police station, Amritsar, confirmed that the woman who had made a complaint of rape and theft in Chandigarh had given a similar complaint in Amritsar. “The woman alleged that she was raped by the hotel manager and Rs 35,000 was stolen from her room,” Chopra said.

Chopra said they had registered a case of rape and theft.

In her complaint in Chandigarh, the woman, who claimed she was an employee of an IT company in Jaipur, had alleged that Sunny Kumar (29), a contractual employee of Hotel Taj, raped her at his house in Sector 22. The police said the woman claimed that she wanted to buy a cake to celebrate her birthday.

After his shift ended, the accused met her outside the hotel. She and the accused then went to the latter’s house in Sector 22 to celebrate her birthday.
