Mohali, June 7
Deputy Commissioner Gurpreet Kaur Sapra on Thursday said one crore saplings would be planted in next three years in Mohali. As many as 20 lakh saplings will be planted this year.
Farmers have already planted 1,22,784 saplings in the district under an agroforestry mission.
Sapra said sandalwood saplings would also be provided to farmers through the Forest Department nursery, situated at Mullanpur. During the drive, preference will be given to traditional plants. The DC further shared that there was 10.75 per cent forest area in the district besides 10,000 hectare hilly region was the natural forest zone.
She said under the mission, saplings would be planted in schools, colleges and at common land in 464 villages.
The Deputy Commissioner further said every resident in the district would be encouraged to plant at least two to five saplings and preference will be given to local varieties.
Sapra added awareness parks had been established at Bhabhat, Peer Muchalla and Siswan under the drive.
