Patiala, March 16
As many as 180 children from various schools in Patiala district participated in ‘Special Olympics’, a one-day event for differently abled children, organised at Amar Ashram and Polo Ground here today jointly by the District Special Olympics Association and the District Education Officer.
The initiative was part of ‘Special Olympics Bharat’, which aims at training special kids and holding sports competitions for them to make a difference in their life. The Special Olympics Mission remains as significant today as it was when the movement was founded in 1968.
Col Karaminder Singh, president, Society for Welfare of the Handicapped, said, “Sports events like these strengthen and benefit such people intellectually, physically, mentally, socially and spiritually.”
District Education Officer Darshan Lal, who was the chief guest, said ‘Special Olympics’ provides countless opportunities to children. “It will help in developing the children physically and making them courageous,” he said.
All the participants were awarded certificates.
