City resident Navtej Mangat emerged the tricity topper in the AIIMS MBBS entrance with all-India rank (AIR) 40. The results were declared today. The only other tricity student to break into the top 100 was Ankush Jindal of Mohali with AIR 65. Last year, five students from the tricity had featured among the top 100. The topper, Arushi, had AIR 10.

A student of St. John’s School, Navtej secured 94.2 per cent marks in Class XII. He wanted to become a doctor ever since he was in Class I. By Class VIII, he had decided to get into AIIMS and was working towards it ever since. Ankush wants to become a neurosurgeon like his father. He scored 92.6 per cent marks in Class XII from The British School, Chandigarh. Both Navtej and Ankush said it was important to keep off the social media “as it tires the brain and eyes and is a distraction”. Navtej says he is not active on the social media and studied for seven to eight hours a day. Ankush used only a messaging application and rarely used other sites. He set weekly targets of completing the syllabus and accomplished it.

Another common trait among both of them is self-confidence and drive. Both of them said there were several disappointments along the way but they stayed positive. Navtej says, “Disappointments should not bog you down, you have to stay motivated”. Speaking on similar lines, Ankush says, “I read somewhere that fall down seven times, get up eight. It has been my motivation”.

Three more from region among top 100

Three more from the region, who took coaching in Chandigarh, broke into the top 100. They include Haryana girl Mehak Singhal with AIR 14. The other two are from Punjab. Ishmeet Kaur secured AIR 41 while Arushi Jain bagged AIR 78. A better show was expected from the tricity, especially  after the JEE (Advanced) results on Sunday. The tricity got the best-ever results with Panchkula boy bagging AIR 1. However, the performance in the AIIMS MBBS entrance has deteriorated as compared to last year. All eyes are now on the NEET results, expected to be declared within 10 days.
