Mohali: Two members of a family were killed and three others injured when their car was hit by a speeding truck near Shahabad, (Haryana).



Mohali: Two members of a family were killed and three others injured when their car was hit by a speeding truck near Shahabad, (Haryana). The deceased have been identified as Poonam (51) and her mother Janak (71), while the injured included Daljit Singh (Poonam’s husband) and his two children, Piyush and Aishwarya. The family was on its way home in Sector 69, Mohali, after seeing off their eldest daughter Dipika at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi.  Daljit Singh said the truck was being driven at high speed. “In a bid to avoid collision with another truck (which was in front of it), the driver swerved the vehicle to the left and hit our car,” he said. The victims were taken to a private hospital in Shahabad. TNS

43-yr-old cyclist hit by car, dies 

Chandigarh: A 43-year-old cyclist died after being hit by a white Ciaz car on the road separating Sectors 27 and 28 on Saturday. The deceased, Dev Narain, was a daily wager and resided in Tin Colony. Narain was taken to the PGI, where he was declared brought dead. The accused, Rajesh Chaudhary, a resident of Phase X, Mohali, was arrested and later released on bail. A case has been registered against him. TNS

Man commits suicide

Mohali: A 35-year-old man, Narinder Singh, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his residence in Phase XI on Friday. According to the police, the victim had gone to Mumbai to start a business sometime ago. The police said the victim was depressed due to huge financial losses in his business. Narinder, who was unmarried, was living with his father. The victim’s father came to know about the incident in the morning when he returned home from a gurdwara and found the door of the room bolted from inside. After breaking open the door, he found his son hanging. The police said no suicide note had been recovered from the spot. TNS

One arrested with opium

Mohali: The police arrested a person carrying 500 grams of opium at Nayagaon here on Saturday. The accused has been identified as Sukhwant Singh, alias Samma, a resident of Chakkipur village, near Mullanpur, here. According to the police, Samma was on foot when he was intercepted near Karoran T-Point. On being searched, the police recovered 500 grams of opium from his possession. A case has been registered against him. TNS

Two held under NDPS Act

Chandigarh: The police arrested two men with heroin on Saturday. Raghav Narang, a resident of Raipur Khurd village, was arrested from Mauli Jagran. Four grams of heroin was recovered from his possession. A case has been registered. Another accused, Amritpal, a resident of Bathinda, was arrested from Vikas Nagar in Mauli Jagran. Five grams of heroin was recovered from his possession. TNS

Three theft incidents reported

Chandigarh: Three theft incidents were reported from the city on Saturday. A motorcycle was stolen from the rear side of the Sector 34-A market. Sukhwinder Singh of Sector 20 has registered a complaint in this regard. In another incident, a woman of Ropar reported that someone had stoles her purse containing Rs 2,500 in cash, gold jewellery and keys from her car parked in the Sector 22-B market on Friday. A case has been registered. In yet another theft, Prem Singh of Mani Majra reported that someone had stolen four cellphones, a gold ring, Rs 10,000 in cash, an ATM card, a credit card and documents from his house. A case has been registered. TNS

5 more test positive for swine flu

Chandigarh: Four residents from Chandigarh and one child from Mohali tested positive for swine flu on Saturday. A one-and-a-half-year-old girl from Dhanas is admitted to a hospital in Mohali, while a six-month-old boy from Mani Majra, a 59-year-old man from Mani Majra, a 69-year-old man from Sector 50 and a one-year-old child from Bud Majra are admitted to the PGI. Undertrial alleges assault

Chandigarh: An undertrial lodged in Burail Jail for theft has alleged that he was beaten up by three policemen. The undertrial, Kuldeep Kumar, deposed off in front of Chief Judicial Magistrate Askhdeep Mahajan and submitted an application describing the matter. The CJM has summoned the jail superintendent on Tuesday and directed that Kumar’s medical examination be conducted. The application says that on August 14, when Kumar was returning to the barracks from the factory, three policemen on duty stopped him. They allegedly beat him up with sticks for no apparent reason, says the application. While Kumar said he did not know names of two of the policemen, one of them was Gurpreet. TNS

Legal literacy camp

Panchkula:  The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Panchkula, organised a special legal literacy camp at its office to sensitise officials at grassroots level regarding various legal issues such as welfare schemes for children and women and ill-effects of drugs. The camp was addressed by Nidhi Bansal, Chief Judicial Magistrate-cum-Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, Panchkula. Various panel lawyers of the authority made the gathering aware about various laws and legal aid schemes. Documentaries on AIDS, POCSO Act, child labour and ill-effects of drugs were shown. The anganwadi workers, ASHAs, sarpanches and panches were instructed to carry out activities to identify the children in need of care and protection so that they could be integrated with the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS), a programme which provides food, pre-school education and primary health care to children under 6 years of age and their mothers. One held with liquor

Kharar: The police have arrested Deepak Kumar, a resident of Kharar, following the recovery of 21 bottles of liquor from him. ASI Nidhan Singh was on patrolling near the Bansan Wali octroi barrier when he noticed the accused. During the search, 21 bottles of liquor were recovered from him, which were meant to be sold in Chandigarh only. A case under the Excise Act has been registered. OC

Conspiracy to commit crime

Ropar: The district police claimed to have arrest three youths, who allegedly had been planning to commit a crime in the town. The accused have been identified as Vishal, a resident of Nalagarh, Gurpreet from Nanakpura in Ropar and Ishar Singh of Kurali. The police have seized a revolver, pistol and four live cartridges from the accused. Vishal, also known as Jaggi Ropar Wala, had been on the hit list of Vicky Gounder after he allegedly challenged him and used foul language for him and his family members through his Facebook account. Following this, Inder, a member of Vicky Gounder gang, threatened of eliminating him soon. Ironically, since then the police kept on claiming that there was no such person, who was the target of Vicky Gounder. TNS
