Two youths were arrested by the operation cell of the UT police while driving an Innova with a fake registration number and carrying a country-made pistol and four live cartridges. Their accomplices, Tinku and Balwinder, managed to flee from the spot.
The police claimed that the youths had come to the city in connection with of the coming student elections.
According to the police, they got a tip-off that four youths were moving in an Innova with a fake registration number following which a naka was laid on the road separating Sectors 8 and 9. The vehicle was stopped by the police following which two youths were arrested while the other two managed to flee from the spot.
Inspector Surinder Kumar, in-charge, operation cell, said the two arrested youths were Paramvir Singh, a native of Ludhiana, and Satnam, a native of Ferozepur. “Paramvir has a case of attempt to murder registered against him in Ludhiana,” he said. The police said Satnam was driving the Innova, bearing a registration number of Haryana, while Paramvir was carrying a country-made pistol and four live cartridges. Two number plates bearing fake registration numbers were recovered from the vehicle.
Police investigations into the case have revealed that the duo had arrived in the city in view of the coming student elections at Panjab University and city colleges, due early next month. “We are investigating the links of the youths with student leaders,” said a source.
A case has been registered.
