The operation cell of the UT police has recovered 20 scooters that were financed on fake documents and further sold at a lesser price. The police have arrested five persons in the case, including an employee of a finance company and a salesman of a scooter dealership in Zirakpur.
A team, led by Inspector Narinder Patial, in-charge of the operation cell, had earlier this week arrested Sukhdev Singh, a resident of Sector 48, Surjit Singh, a resident of Deep Complex, Hallo Majra, Sanjay, alias Ronthalia, a resident of Phase I, Ram Darbar, Sandeep, alias Sonu, a resident of Chaundhri village, Dera Bassi, and Pardeep Gautam, a resident of Dera Bassi.
The police said Sukhdev and Surjit in connivance with Sandeep, alias Sonu, an employee of Capital First Pvt Ltd, a finance company, took documents of gullible people who had applied for loan through the finance company. “The accused used to change the address of the people on the documents while their photos and names were the same. Based on the fake documents, they applied for two-wheeler loans with the finance company,” said a police official.
The accused used to then submit the fake documents at Bedi Suzuki, Zirakpur, in connivance with the salesman there, identified as Pardeep Gautam. The police said another accused, Sanjay, was also involved in the cheating racket.
The accused used to further sell the scooters to innocent persons at a cost of Rs 35,000. The accused used to assure the buyers that the scooters would be transferred in their names. However, that never happened.
The police recovered 20 scooters, which were financed on fake documents. While the police recovered six scooters from the possession of Sanjay, who used to offer scooters on rent on a daily basis for Rs 150, four scooters were recovered from several persons in Bathinda while seven were recovered from residents of Panchkula.
All accused are on police remand till March 24.
All scooters had same temporary number
The police said since all scooters had the same temporary number. A man in Ram Darbar got suspicious after he found that all scooters given on rent by Sanjay had the same number. The information was shared with the police that led to the arrest of the gang.
How the money was shared
While Sukhdev and Surjit kept the major share of money from the sale of the scooters, Sandeep and Pardeep were paid around Rs 3,000 per scooter.
