Chandigarh, July 22

No girls’ college in the city has managed to fill all BCA seats even as the second counselling was held today. Of the 235 vacant seats, 199 are from girls’ colleges. The lone co-educational college where the seats are lying vacant is SGGS College in Sector There also exists a huge gender disparity.

As many as 1,200 boys applied for the course against 563 girls. Colleges blame the centralised counselling procedure and the rush for co-educational colleges for the debacle this year. Dev Samaj College, Sector 45, and the PGGCG- 42 are also planning to go co-educational soon. Dev Samaj College has already applied for it. Binu Dogra, Principal of the PGGCG- 42, said they were planning to do so. Incidentally, these two colleges have the highest number of vacant seats.

Even popular colleges like the MCMDAV- 36 and the PGGCG-11 too have a large number of vacant seats. MCMDAV- 36 Principal Nisha Bhargawa said, “Students are opting for BCom and BBA. Others choose science courses. Due to this, the number of applications received for BCA remained low.”

The vacant seats will not be filled through the centralised counselling now. Students can now approach the colleges where they want to seek admission and apply. Till last year, the colleges had a common merit list. Thus, all seats were filled.
