Chandigarh, December 17

In yet another carjacking, four persons took away a new MPV, Toyota Crysta, from its driver at gunpoint on the road separating Sector 45 and 33 on Saturday night. This is the third carjacking here in less than 10 days.

Police sources said the driver, identified as Jagdeep Singh, was returning to the taxi stand in Sector 46 after dropping a passenger when the incident took place at around 2 am. The vehicle had a temporary number, CH-05T-9372.

As soon as Jagdeep hit the road separating Sector 45 and 33, a silver-coloured Tata Indica hit the MPV from behind with the intention of stopping him. When he alighted from the vehicle to see what had happened, four persons, including one carrying a pistol, got off the car and threatened him.

They snatched the keys of the MPV keys and fled the spot. “While two of the carjackers drove the MPV, their accomplices escaped in the car,” the sources said.

Jagdeep failed to note down the registration number of the car.

Meanwhile, the owner of the MPV, Manjit Singh, who is into the taxi business, said he had purchased the vehicle on December 11. “After the incident, my driver rushed to the taxi stand and we informed the police about the incident,” he added.

Manjit said the driver didn’t retaliate as he could have been harmed by the carjackers.

Police teams rushed to the spot and recorded the statement of the victim. The UT police also informed their counterparts in Mohali and Panchkula. The police suspect the accused escaped towards Punjab.

A case of robbery has been registered at the Sector 34 police station.

The sources said the victim driver was shown the pictures of criminals from the police record.
