Chandigarh, December 11

It was a tough evening for two-wheeler riders using the waste dumping ground road in Dadu Marja.

A large number of bike and scooter riders met with accidents after their vehicles skidded on the road one after the other. Waste residue and oil and diesel that had leaked from vehicles carrying garbage had made the road slippery, resulting in the mishaps.

Local residents said around 40 two-wheelers skidded on  the road. “When passersby first saw a biker falling on the road, they presumed he must be drunk. However, they were in for a shock when they saw bikes skidding one after the other. Later, we raised the alarm and asked people not to apply brakes on that stretch. About 30 two-wheelers skidded in less than half an hour,” said Harjinder Singh, chairman, Residents Welfare Association, Dadu Majra Colony.

“Some two-wheeler riders ended up with injuries on the knees and face. Two cars also collided on the stretch. The victims were seen quarrelling, blaming each other for causing the accident,” said a local resident.

It all started at 6 pm on the road separating the dumping ground and the waste processing plant. The PCR and the fire control room were called up. A fire engine was pressed into service which used water to clean the road, provided relief to motorists.

Meanwhile, the waste processing issue remains unresolved as the company has failed to process the entire waste, resulting in the piling up of garbage at the dumping ground and causing foul smell. MC Additional Commissioner Saurabh Mishra said they were following the NGT guidelines and had given some time to the firm. —TNS
