5 days on, missing teenage girl found dead in Mohali

A 17-year-old girl, Jyoti, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Sector 69 here this evening. The maggot-infested body was found in bushes opposite Mayo Hospital. 

Vinod, who runs a tea stall near the hospital, informed the police that he was answering the nature’s call when he noticed foul smell. He went ahead and found the maggot-infested body fo a girl lying in bushes. 

He raised the alarm and called up the police at around 4 pm.

A police official said, “The body had stabbing wounds in the abdomen and the face was smashed, in an apparent attempt to conceal the victim’s identity. Prima facie, it appears to be a case of murder.”

The cop said CCTV footage of the locality was being scrutinised to get some clue to the crime.

The police said a case has been registered against unknown person/persons under Sections 201 and 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the body has been sent for post-mortem examination. 

The girl, who worked as a domestic help at a house in Sector 68, had gone missing on November 9. 

Two days later, her father Navaratan Singh, a resident of Mataur, submitted a complaint to the Phase VIII police station that his daughter was did not return home after work.

The complainant, who works as a labourer, had gone to his native village Alipur Gujron in Uttar Pradesh with his wife when his son Deepak called him up to inform that Jyoti did not return home after work. 

He rushed back to Mohali and reported the matter to the police.

The family had moved to Mataur from UP about two years ago.

Navrattan Singh said he did not suspect anyone’s involvement.

Mandeep Singh, the owner of the house where the victim was working, said she had started working at their place about 11 months ago, adding that they had started looking for her on learning from her parents that she had gone missing.
