Mohali, February 21

The police have booked 15 persons, including six women — Gurdas Singh of Bassi Pathana, Fatehgarh Sahib, Eishika, Gurleen Kaur, Kulvir Singh Kaura, Reet Kaura, Vikas, Manjot Kaur, Vinay Kumar, Harman Singh Grewal, Raj Karan, Shargan, Shahid, Ritu Sharma, Reena, and Harkirat — involved in an immigration consultancy for cheating and a criminal conspiracy of lakhs of rupees on the pretext of sending people abroad.

A case was registered against the owners of The Yellow Leaf Consultancy on the basis of a complaint by Dhir Singh (58), a resident of Behlana. The police said that there is a network of such consultancy firms at various places, including the Tricity, and over half-a-dozen such firms are already in police records for various reasons.

Dhir said he contacted the firm as he wanted to send his daughter to Canada and paid Rs 7.71 lakhs to the consultancy. “I have recently learned that this ‘consultancy’ has duped several people who were desirous of going abroad of crores of rupees. The main suspect in this case, Gurdas, has half-a-dozen firms in the Tricity alone,” he said.

A case under Sections 406, 420, 120-B and 24 of the IPC was registered at the Sohana police station on February 13. The police said that the offices that were under the suspects are being probed by various police teams in the district.
