As many as 70 outsiders were rounded up during a three-hour joint raid conducted by the Panjab University campus security and the UT police in seven boys’ hostels at the PU early this morning. The raid began at 3 am and continued till 6 am today.

According to the university, 14 outsiders were rounded up in the boys’ hostel numbers 2 and 5. A majority of the students rounded up in the hostels had come for admission to various courses in the university.

Sources said wardens had complained to the authorities regarding outsiders staying in hostels without paying the guest charges. The police were informed about it following which the raid was conducted. DSP (Central) Satish Kumar said keeping in view the student council elections in the university, the raid was conducted in all boys’ hostels. He said the documents of all students, who were rounded up, were verified. Later, they were let off.

Satish Kumar said the police had prepared a list of all students in whose rooms the outsiders were found during the checking. The list would be sent to the university for action as per the campus norms.

He said more such raids would be carried out at the hostels in the next one month to avoid any untoward incident on the campus.

PU Dean Students Welfare Navdeep Goyal said they had prepared a list of the students in whose rooms the outsiders were staying. They would impose a fine Rs 2,000 on them, besides issuing a warning. In case outsiders were found in the rooms of the same students again, their allotment would be cancelled by the university.

Wardens’ complaint

Sources said wardens had complained to the authorities about outsiders staying in hostels without paying the guest charges. The police were informed about it following which the raid was conducted.
