A 73-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at Terraced Garden, Sector 33, this morning.
According to the police, the victim, identified as Manmohan Singh, an ex-serviceman, committed suicide by hanging himself from the railing of a bridge over a choe crossing the park.
Inspector Baljit Singh, SHO of the Sector 34 police station, said the victim used his turban to hang himself from the railing. “According to the deceased’s kin, he was depressed and a diabetic,” he said.
The SHO said at around 2 am, the victim left the house when everyone was fast asleep. “The watchman of the locality saw him going. He thought the elderly man was going for a walk,” he said.
In the morning, the family members found the victim missing from the house. They informed the police. Later, the police got information about a man having hanged himself in the park.
The victim was taken to Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16, where he was declared brought dead. The autopsy was conducted and the body handed over to the family.
The deceased is survived by three sons. He was living with one of his sons, Balwinder Singh, and his family in Sector 45. While the victim’s eldest son, Rajinder Singh, lives in Sector 32, the younger one, Manjit Singh, lives in Kharar.
No suicide note was recovered from the spot. The police have ruled out foul play. Inquest proceedings have been initiated into the matter.
