970 law graduates get degrees

CHANDIGARH: As many as 970 law graduates of Panjab University received degrees from the senior-most Judge of the Supreme Court, Justice TS Thakur, during the second law convocation at the university here today.

Chandigarh, April 11

As many as 970 law graduates of Panjab University received degrees from the senior-most Judge of the Supreme Court, Justice TS Thakur, during the second law convocation at the university here today.

As many as 570 degree recipients were girls. The convocation was jointly organised by the Department of Laws, PU, and the University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS), PU Campus.

During the convocation, law graduate (LLB, LLM, BA LLB (five-year) students of 2012-13 and 2013-14 batches from the PU Department of Laws, UILS, PU Campus, PU regional centres in Hoshiarpur, Ludhiana and Muktsar were awarded degrees. The toppers from the two previous batches were also felicitated on the occasion.

Justice SK Mittal, the senior-most Judge at the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Permod Kohli former Chief Justice, High Court of Sikkim, and Justice Augustine George Masih, Judge at the Punjab and Haryana High Court, were also present on the occasion.

While delivering the Justice Mehr Chand Mahajan Memorial Lecture and convocation address, TS Thakur gave tips to the law graduates for becoming better advocates and judges.

Justice Thakur recalled how he tried hard to study laws at the PU but could not get admission as the admissions were over. He recalled how he tried to persuade the then head of the department Prof Shiv Dayal using various channels but could not succeed. He appreciated how the rules were not breached at the PU despite pulls and pressures.

Former Chief Justice, High Court of Sikkim, Justice Permod Kohli, was also honoured on the occasion, who is incidentally the first gold medallist of the PU in LLM.
