After a long wait of one year, the affixation of high security registration plates (HSRP) will start soon as UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore approved the new rates for the HSRPs today.

The Transport Department will issue the allotment letter to the selected firm tomorrow to begin the work soon.

Sources said residents would have to pay double for the HSRPs now. While the residents were paying Rs 79 for the two-wheelers and Rs 183 for the four- wheelers in the old rates now they will have to Rs 160 for the two-wheelers and Rs 360 for the four-wheelers now which is almost double of the existing rates.

Sources in the department said the rates fixed by the Administration were lower than the other states. As per the agreement,  the rates will remain the same for the next seven years.

The Transport Department has finalised the firm, Test Security, for the affixation of the HSRPs after it has been found successful in the tender opened recently.

The company agreed to reduce the rates after a high-power committee under the chairmanship of the Home secretary negotiated with the firm to reduce the rates. Earlier, the company proposed Rs 380 for a four-wheeler and Rs 225 for a two -wheeler.

Earlier, the Transport Department scrapped the tenders twice for the HSRPs due to various reasons.

The last tender was cancelled two months ago after the company refused to reduce the rates during the negotiation. The delay in finding a new vendor has led to a huge backlog in thousands.

The process of affixation of HSRPs for the series CH01-BG, CH01-BH and CH03-N was stopped in July 2016. Since then approximately 60, 000 vehicles are waiting the HSRPs. Now, it will be a tough job for the RLA to clear the clear after the work is allotted to the new firm.
