Another feather in PGIMER’s cap

CHANDIGARH: The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), premier healthcare institute of the region, has been awarded for its contribution to the promotion of cadaver organ donation programme in the ‘Best Hospital’ category, stated a communiqué from the institute.

The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), premier healthcare institute of the region, has been awarded for its contribution to the promotion of cadaver organ donation programme in the ‘Best Hospital’ category, stated a communiqué from the institute.

Anupriya Patel, Minister of State of Heath and Family Welfare, gave away the award at an event organised to celebrate 8th Indian Organ Donation Day by NOTTO (National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation) in New Delhi today.

It was consecutively for the second year that the PGI, Chandigarh, was awarded for being first among the government sector hospitals nationally for its contribution towards the deceased organ donation programme.

The other two hospitals in the top three awarded on the occasion in the ‘Best Hospital’ category are private hospitals - one from Telangana and other from Pune.

On behalf of the PGI, the award was received by Dr Vipin Koushal, Nodal Officer, ROTTO, PGIMER, Dr Naveen Pandey, Assistant Professor, Department of Hospital Administration, and Saryu D Madra, Consultant (IEC/Media) ROTTO, PGIMER, from the Minister of State.

Expressing happiness over the accomplishment, Prof Jagat Ram, Director, PGI, said: “It’s an honour to be acknowledged nationally as first amongst the public sector hospitals for our contribution towards the promotion of deceased organ donation programme for second year successively. We at the PGI dedicate this award to all brave heart donor families whose magnanimous gesture helped saving hundreds of lives and in fact, sustain the deceased donation programme at the PGI.”

Priyanka’s family honoured

During the felicitation of “Donor Families” category, Ashima and Alka from Chandigarh were felicitated for their family’s magnanimous decision to donate the organs of their beloved Priyanka. Priyanka, 23, who worked tirelessly to promote the cause of organ donation as a volunteer, had met with a fatal accident and on February 2, 2017, after being declared brain dead, her parents consented for organ donation which helped save five precious lives.
