An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the Panchkula district police was arrested by the Vigilance Department for allegedly taking Rs 2,500 from a complainant in order to arrest his daughter’s in-laws in a dowry case.
According to information, Hukam Chand, a resident of Alipur village, Panchkula, had lodged a dowry complaint against his daughter’s in-laws who live in Mohali. The case was lodged at Mahila Police Station and Assistant Sub-Inspector Prem Chand was the investigating officer of the case.
Prem Chand allegedly demanded Rs 2,500 from the complainant to make arrests in the case. The latter reported the matter to the vigilance cell.
The vigilance sleuths laid a trap near the Sector 5 bus stand where the Assistant Sub-Inspector was asked to come for receiving the payment. As Hukam Chand handed over the amount to the ASI, the vigilance sleuths caught the policeman.
A case was registered against him and he was produced before the court. The court sent him to judicial remand.
