Chandigarh: Thieves decamped with gold and diamond jewellery worth Rs 2.5 lakh from a lawyer’s house in Sector 11, located just a few metres away from the police station.



Chandigarh: Thieves decamped with gold and diamond jewellery worth Rs 2.5 lakh from a lawyer’s house in Sector 11, located just a few metres away from the police station. Gurjeet Singh Randhawa, complainant, who has rented the first floor of the house, stated he, along with his family, was out of station for 10 days. When they returned on Friday, he found the front window pane opened and the entire house ransacked. Randhawa said the thieves stole two gold chains, four pairs of diamond earrings, gold clips and a necklace.  TNS

9-yr-old boy killed in accident

Kalka: A nine-year-old boy was killed and his uncle critically injured in an accident here on Sunday. Ashok, a resident of Sukhomajri village, Pinjore, was going towards Pinjore on his bike along with his nephew Dipanshu. When they reached near Lohgarh,the bike was hit by a  vehicle. Deepanshu died on the spot while his uncle suffered multiple injuries and was rushed to the GMCH-32, Chandigarh. OC

Hit by tipper, girl dies

Lalru: A 13-year-old girl died after she was allegedly hit by a rashly-driven tipper here on Saturday at Hasanpur village near Lalru. The deceased has been identified as Prabhjot Kaur, a resident of Hasanpur village. According to sources, the incident took place on Saturday evening when the victim was riding a bicycle while her father was walking behind her. The rashly-driven tipper dragged her for about 25 metres. She sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the GMCH, Sector 32, Chandigarh, where she succumbed to her injuries on Sunday morning. The police have registered a case against the driver of the tipper, Mohammad Idnan, a resident of UP.  OC

Cyclist succumbs to injuries

Kharar: Sajjan Singh, a resident of Chunni Khurd village who was seriously injured in a road accident near Jhanjeri village a day before, died at the PGI, Chandigarh, on Sunday. The Kharar police have registered a case under Sections 27 and 304-A of the IPC against Aman Singh, driver of the car that hit the victim. The deceased was on his bicycle when he was hit by the car. He was referred to the PGI from a hospital in Sohana. OC

Entrance test held

Mohali: The entrance test for admission to the Mai Bhago Armed Forces Preparatory Institute for Girls was held on Saturday at Gyan Jyoti Global School. Nearly 1,200 girls appeared for the exam for 25 seats. There are already two batches of 25 girls each currently under training at the institute that provides training  to girls for a career in the defence services as commissioned officer. TNS

Lawyer’s death: Probe begins

Chandigarh: After allegations of foul play by the family of a young lawyer, who was found dead under mysterious circumstances at a flat in Sector 49, the UT police have initiated a probe into the case. However, no case has been registered so far.  The victim, Vandana, was found dead at a flat in Sector 49 on May 11. The victim’s male friend had informed the police about the incident and claimed that she committed suicide. Inspector Ranjodh Singh, SHO, Sector 49 police station, said viscera samples would be sent to Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) to ascertain the cause of the death. “We are also waiting for the autopsy report,” the SHO added. Motorcycle set on fire 

Chandigarh: An unidentified miscreant set a motorcycle on fire in Sector 38. The police have registered a case. Ram, a resident of Sector 38-A, told the police that someone burnt his motorcycle, which was parked in front of his house. The incident came to light on Sunday morning. A case under Section 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against unknown persons at the Sector 39 police station. “We have initiated an investigation and the footage of CCTV cameras, installed in the area, is being scrutinised,” said a police official. Blood donation camps 

Fatehgarh Sahib: The Bharat Vikas Parishad, Sirhind, and the Baba Moti Ram Mehra Blood Donation Society, Fatehgarh Sahib, on Sunday organised two separate blood donation camps at Sirhind and the historic gurdwara in Fatehgarh Sahib, respectively. Kuljeet Singh Nagra, MLA, Fatehgarh Sahib, inaugurated the camp at Sirhind while SAD (B) leader Didar Singh Bhatti inaugurated the camp at the Fatehgarh Sahib gurdwara.Nagra appreciated efforts of the Bharat Vikas Parishad. He said every drop of blood saved lives. He called upon the youth to come forward to eradicate social evils. Sanjeev Sharma, project chairman of the Bharat Vikas Parishad, said it was a regular camp conducted after every three months. As many as 70 units of blood were collected. At the Fatehgard Sahib gurdwara, Sher Singh, president of the local civic body said 100 units of blood were collected. TNS

Cyclist crushed to death

Ropar: A cyclist was crushed to death when a tanker hit him on the Nangal road here on Saturday evening. The deceased  has been identified as Avtar Singh, a resident of Hussainpur village. As the police failed to reach the spot for an hour, area residents blocked the traffic for 20 minutes. Surjit Kaur, wife of the deceased, said he worked as a labourer and was returning home around 8 pm when a tanker hit him near the Sadabrat locality, leading to his death on the spot. The tanker driver fled, leaving the vehicle behind. TNS

16-yr-old abducted from home

Chandigarh: A woman has complained that an unknown person abducted her 16-year-old sister-in-law. The police have registered a case and initiated investigation into the matter. The police said the complainant alleged that the minor was abducted from her house. The complaint was made following which a case under Sections 363 (kidnapping) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered at the IT Park police station. TNS

Youth ends his life

Mohali: A 24-year-old carpenter allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself with a “dupatta” at his residence in Phase 3B1 here. The victim, identified as Rinku, was the only brother of four sisters. The incident came to light when the victim’s father, Tarsem, went to his room late last night and saw him hanging with a “dupatta”. He was taken to a government hospital where he died. According to the victim’s family, Rinku and his father were working as carpenters at a furniture shop in the Sector 52 furniture market.  TNS

Cricket tournament

Patiala: The 15th edition of the hot weather league-cum-knock out cricket tournament, hosted by Black Elephant Cricket Club, will be held from May 28 to June 4 at the hosts ground and YPS, Patiala. HS Arora, chief coach of the BECC, said eight teams from Punjab, UP, Haryana and Chandigarh had confirmed their participation for the event. Boys born as and on January 1, 2000, onwards and up to Class XII can participate in this tournament. Teams have been divided into two pools with four teams in each pool. All matches will be of 40 overs.  TNS
