Chandigarh:Department of Anatomy, PGIMER, received a body as donation. The body of Satyawati (83), a native of Hoshiarpur, was donated on May 15. She expired on May 14. The department said it was grateful to the family and admired them for the noble gesture. TNS


Motorcyclist succumbs to injuries

Chandigarh: A 21-year-old motorcyclist, Kapil Singh Rawat, a resident of Sector 36, who was injured in a road accident on Modnay succumbed to the injuries on Tuesday.

Kapil was hit by an Activa scooter near the Community Centre in Sector 40 on Monday and was admitted to the PGI.The police have arrested the accused identified as Naresh Kumar of Dadu Majra, who was driving the Activa Scooter. TNS


Mobile phone stolen

Chandigarh: Vijay Bahadur, a resident of Sector 25, Chandigarh alleged that two unknown persons robbed his mobile phone from him at Sector 38(West), on May 13. A case has been registeted at the Maloya police station. TNS


Firm for dog sterilisation finalised 

Panchkula : The Panchkula Municipal Corporation has finalised the agency to carry out sterilisation of stray dogs.The agency finalised is of Dr MR Singlaand it will charge Rs 840 for sterlisation of each dog. According to information, the work will be allotted in a day or two.The MC had recently floated tenders for the work but only one agency applied for sterlisation. The MC again recalled the tender and again same agency came forward. Recently, dog-bite incidents had spread panic among Panchkula residents. TNS


3 zoo employees suspended

Zirakpur: Three employees of Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park, commonly known as Chhat Bir zoo, have been suspended in connection with a ticketing fraud. It has been learnt from sources that these people were involved in what can be described as recycling of sold tickets. They collected tickets from the visitors at the entrance and retained those instead of tearing and handing back the remaining portions. Such tickets were then sent back to the ticket window for sale again, the sources said. According to zoo sources, the resale of tickets has led to substantial revenue loss for the zoo administration. The quantum of the loss is yet to be ascertained, the sources said. Bhalinder Singh, Range Officer at Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park, said: “We have suspended three persons in connection with the recycling of tickets. A probe has been initiated”. OC


MC official suspended

Fatehgarh Sahib: Deputy Commissioner Kanwalpreet Brar conducted a surprise checking at the Sirhind-Fatehgarh Sahib Municipal Council on Tuesday. Four officers, including executive officer and assistant engineer, were found absent. The DC inspected the record related to the tendering process of various works. Sources said the DC recommended the suspension of Inderjit Dhand, incharge electricity and streetlight repair department, as he had marked present, but was not available nor he came to the office after repeated calls by officials. OC


Undertrial’s escape bid foiled

Kharar: Charanjit Singh, an undertrial, who was brought here from Nabha Jail in connection with a hearing in the Kharar court by the police, tried to escape from the court complex. However, he was caught after a brief chase. When he tried to run away from the police custody, policemen on duty chased him and caught him. Police officials, who brought the accused from Nabha Jail, said he was brought here in connection with a mining case registered against him at the Mullanpur Garibdass police station. They reported the matter to the local police, which registered a fresh case against the accused under Section 224 of the IPC. OC


Drug peddler arrested

Kharar: The police have arrested Rohit Goswami of Gharuan village near here following the recovery of 350 intoxicant capsules from his possession. Gharuan SHO Manfool Singh said the accused was running a fast food counter in Gharuan and was also doing illegal business of intoxicants. Acting on a tip-off, the police raised his place and arrested him following the recovery of intoxicants. A case under relevant sections of the NDPS Act has been registered against the accused. He was sent to one-day police remand by the Kharar court on Tuesday afternoon. OC


Couple booked for fraud

Zirakpur: The police on Tuesday booked a couple for duping a resident of Gurdaspur of Rs 2 lakh. The accused has been identified as Lakha Devasar and his wife Ramla Devasar, residents of Zirakpur. Police sources said the victim, Amardeep Singh, in his complaint to the police had alleged that in 2014, the accused, Lakha Devasar, along with his wife, had approached him with an offer of getting him job in the Punjab Forest Department. The victim alleged that the accused told him that a job of forest guard was available for Rs 2 lakh. The accused neither returned the money to complainant nor got them recruited, the sources said. The victims approached them several times, but they refused to return the money. Going with the statement of the victim, the police have registered a case against husband-wife duo under various Sections of the IPC and started investigations. OC


Fire at wild growth

Panchkula: A fire broke out in the wild growth in Shamlat land of Bator village at Raipur Rani today. However, village sarpanch Lakshman Das said some mischievous elements of the village knowingly put fire on the wild growth. He said though fire tenders doused the flames, some people of the village were time and again putting this wild growth, which is panchayat’s property, on fire which was not only causing financial losses to the panchayat but also helping people, who want to encroach upon Shamlat land.  TNS


Two held for fraud

Mohali: The police arrested two persons for duping a dismissed inspector on Tuesday. Inspector Amarpreet Singh, station house officer, Phase XI police station, said accused Ram Gopal and constable Mandeep Singh had duped Kuljinder Singh of Rs 38 lakh on the pretext of reinstating him. The complainant was dismissed two years ago. The police said Kuljinder Singh had got in touch with Ram Gopal and Mandeep Singh, both posted at the Police Headquarters in Sector 9, Chandigarh. The duo took Rs 38 lakh from him two months ago. When the two stopped taking Kuljinder’s calls, he filed a police complaint.  “We have arrested the duo and investigations are on,” said ASI Narinder Singh. A case under Sections 420, 467, 468 of the IPC has been registered against Ram Gopal and Mandeep Singh. TNS


Two arrested for rape

Chandigarh: Four days after the registeration of a gang rape case, the UT police have arrested the accused. The accused have been identified as Kalu, alias Kunal, a resident of Mani Majra and Gurbachan Singh of Ambala. The incident took place on May 8 and a case was registered against the duo, after the victim along with her family members, reported the matter to local police on May 12. According to the police, the victim had gone to the market when accused Kalu abducted her and took her to his house. He then called his cousin, Gurbachan. The two gave the victim some intoxicant and raped her repeatedly. A case was registered at the Mani Majra police station. TNS


National Dengue Day

Mohali: Punjab Health and Family Welfare Minister Brahm Mohindra has launched the live portal of the  National Vector-Borne Diseases Control Programme at the auditorium of the Punjab Health System Cooperation at Phase VI. On National Dengue Day, the minister asked the health authorities to gear up to tackle dengue. He said awareness should be created through social networking, seminars, workshops, advertisements and plays. The state had recorded more than 3,200 cases of dengue last year and Mohali district had topped the chart with 1,200 cases.  “Residents too need to come forward. We will ensure patients get all facilities at government hospitals, the minister said.  The health authorities were directed to visit vulnerable areas on a regular basis. Mohali MLA Balbir Singh Sidhu said 80 per cent of the dengue cases were being reported from urban areas. “Last year, our district topped the list in the state with the highest number of dengue cases. It’s really a matter of concern for all of us,” said Sidhu. He urged the minister to upgrade the Mohali Civil Hospital and fill vacant posts. A cycle rally by children and auto drivers was flagged off. TNS


Residents meet Mayor

Chandigarh: To help beautify and develop the city, the Resident Welfare Association (RWA), Modern Complex, Mani Majra, suggested measures to Mayor Asha Jaswal on Tuesday. The RWA conducted a study on the ongoing work of fixing paver blocks in the MHC, Chandigarh. Col Gursewak Singh (retd), president, said each RWA should be involved in development projects. The association can act as a bridge between MC officials and residents and a number of problems can be solved. Earlier, the Senior Citizens Welfare Association, MHC, Mani Majra, organised a health awareness programme at Gurukul Global School, Mani Majra. More than 150 elderly persons participated. TNS


ESIC penalised

Mohali: The local ESIC authorities have been told to pay Rs 4 lakh as compensation to complainants for not reimbursing medical bills worth Rs 10 lakh in time. In three years, around 30 workers, being covered under the ESIC, have approached the district consumer forum against the delay in reimbursement of their medical bills amounting to nearly Rs 10 lakh. Jasbir Singh, an advocate, said consumer courts had ordered a compensation of Rs 4 lakh in 20 such cases while the decision in the remaining cases will be pronounced in a month or two. “The authorities (ESIC) have to pay Rs 4 lakh as compensation along with the reimbursement of the bills to the complainants. In some cases, medical bills amount to Rs 5,000. Why don’t they (the authorities) reimburse the medical bills in time,” asked Jasbir Singh. He added that in case of Jai Parkash, a local factory worker,  the amount was Rs 3,272, but was not paid by the ESIC authorities. But after the intervention of the consumer court, Jai Parkash was not only reimbursed the amount, but also given Rs 20,000 as compensation. Sources said the ESIC was collecting more than Rs 10 crore per month from factory workers (6.5 per cent of their wages).  As per the ESIC report, the corporation had collected Rs 10867.14 crore from contributions of the workers across the country in 2014-15. The expenditure was 7510.65 crore and the profit was  Rs 3356.49 crore. TNS


Dengue day observed

Patiala: A district-level programme on National Dengue Day was organised at the Naina Devi temple, Ablowal, with the help of the Community Health Centre, Model Town. The area was highly affected by dengue last year. A cycle rally, poster competition and lectures were delivered to spread awareness regarding the measures to be taken to prevent the spread of dengue and chikungunya.On this occasion, PRTC Chairman KK Sharma was the chief guest, who appealed to people to come together to curb the diseases. He informed that in all government hospitals, free testing and treatment were available. Civil Surgeon Dr Balwinder Singh informed that dengue and chikungunya were caused by aedes aegypti, a female mosquitoe. Dr Gurmanjeet told about symptoms of dengue and chikungunya in detail. TNS
