A burglar broke into four houses in Sector 19 last night while the families were asleep. Cash and goods were stolen from the houses though he failed to decamp with valuables. The incident was caught on a CCTV camera at one of the houses.

Iqbal Singh (89), who stays with his wife in House No. 59, said he and his wife were asleep when the thief entered their house by removing a windowpane. “My wife and I were sleeping in different rooms. The thief even entered our rooms and ransacked almirahs,” he said.

Iqbal Singh said the thief stole Rs 3,000, some goods, including his slippers, and wallets of both of them. “Since we didn’t have much cash, he could not steal much,” he said.

The thief also entered House No. 48 by cutting the iron mesh of the kitchen window. Rajesh Kumar said the thief was caught on a CCTV camera installed at his house.

“The thief entered our house by scaling the rear wall at 2.13 am and left the house after two hours at 4.13 am,” he said.

Rajesh Kumar said the entire family was asleep and the thief decamped with the cash kept in the rooms of children. “We don’t know the exact amount, but a few thousand rupees were stolen from our house. We are yet to check if something else is also missing,” he said.

The thief also entered House No. 62 by removing the mesh of the kitchen window while the family members were asleep.

LP Bali said nothing was stolen from the house as one of them woke up and went to the kitchen following  which the thief fled.  The thief also entered House No. 9 while the family members were asleep. Residents came to know about the thefts only in the morning after which the police were informed. A police team and a forensic team visited the spots and lifted fingerprints of the thief from the houses.

The matter is under investigation at the Sector 19 police station. The police have procured the CCTV footage, which is being scrutinised.
