Chandigarh, August 20

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has reported a loss of Rs 9 lakh in the case of theft of cables in its complaint to the Chandigarh Police. The theft had rendered 2,000 landline phones dead.

The Internet services were also disrupted as landline phones are used to provide broadband connectivity.

The theft had taken place near the MLA hostels in Sector 4 on the night intervening August 18 and 19.

“We have restored connections to the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the Legislative Assembly building and the Punjab and Haryana Secretariats. We will restore the supply to the remaining area, including official residences of the Punjab and Haryana staff, by Monday,” said Jatinder Mahajan, Deputy General Manager, BSNL, Chandigarh circle.

He said, “The work is in full progress. Digging work is going on with the help of an earth mover.” On Sunday morning, the BSNL submitted a formal complaint to the police though an FIR is yet to be registered. “An FIR will be registered, but a DDR has already been lodged,” he said.

Five cables, each measuring 100 metre, were stolen. It has come out that a number of people could be involved in the theft and it must have taken them four to five hours to execute the theft.
